As part of our acknowledgement and celebration of Harmony Week, Volleyball WA will host the 2024 Harmony Cup on March 17, a social volleyball competition for all communities to play and celebrate our vibrant multicultural State.
This year our event is supported by the Office of Multicultural Interests and a few cultural performances have been scheduled during the day; Lion Chung Wah Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe (1:30 pm), Perth Filipino Dance Troupe (2 pm) and Hacchan Taiko drumming (2:20 pm), and there will also be a Harmony themed craft activity for kids.
This event has grown from 8 teams in 2018 to 35 teams in 2024 with players from very diverse backgrounds, including Australia, India, Afghanistan, Japan, Brazil, Italy, The Philippines, Papua New Guinea, China, Malaysia, Fiji, Mauritius and more hitting the courts at Loftus Recreation Centre.
Volleyball is truly a world sport, with 221 countries playing the game across the globe. Volleyball WA has witnessed its popularity within the local CaLD community and its ability to bring people together. Volleyball is uniting people, helping to connect others who share similar cultural backgrounds and a love for the game.
“Volleyball WA’s cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths as we continue to reflect the wider multicultural WA community. In 2023, 37.3% of players in the top two grades of WAVL were not born in Australia and currently, 8 out of 19 staff are non-Australian born.” Said Robyn Kuhl, CEO of Volleyball WA.
Wear something orange during Harmony Week to show support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and the encouragement of mutual respect. We encourage our volleyball community to experience, explore and appreciate WA’s wealth of cultural, religious, and linguistic diversity.
The next Social Solley competition celebrating our multicultural state will be the Alcohol, Think Again Country of Origin Indoor on October 6.
