Volleyball crosses vast oceans to bring the sport to small communities.

Volleyball WA spent two weeks delivering a series of volleyball skills workshops, community, and school sessions, to children, youth and adults from the Cocos (Keeling) Island and Christmas Island communities on behalf of the Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries. Services provided by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries in the IOT are delivered in partnership with the Australian Government, through Commonwealth funding support

Between February 28 – March 10, José Manuel Martinez Rebollar, Volleyball Australia Level 2 State Coach and Volleyball WA Education Coordinator, delivered an amazing 14 school sessions on Christmas Island to a total of 300 students plus two specialised sessions for the athletes traveling to Perth later in the year for country week plus seven school sessions on Cocos Islands to a further 100 students. The Christmas Island school teams have placed in the top 3 over the last 5 editions of the School Sport WA Country Week volleyball.

The kids weren’t the only ones to benefit from our visit, we delivered eight community sessions to various age groups including the first Seniors Chair Volley session in the Christmas Island Senior Citizens Stay on Your Feet program.

“Volleyball WA would like to thank our government funding partners for the opportunity to engage these multicultural communities. Regional communities are always so grateful for access to expert coaching to boost their own programs and we are thankful for the opportunity to grow our sport and inspire the next generation.” Said Robyn Kuhl, CEO Volleyball WA.

Volleyball WA would also like to thank our local partners for their support, Christmas Island Senior High School, Cocos Islands District High School, the Shire of Christmas Island, Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the Christmas Island Recreation Centre.
