Volleyball WA goes offshore

Volleyball WA recently traveled to the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands to promote the game and provide upskilling to the locals. This annual development visit is one of the projects within the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries’ servicing of the Indian Ocean Territories. We were able to spend ten days delivering community and school clinics, referee workshops, and Country Week squad training.

Volleyball is very popular on the Islands, particularly in the schools. We visited Christmas Island, West Island, and Home Island schools running 29 separate clinics across all age groups in total we delivered training to 311 students.  We also worked with the Christmas Island Senior High School Country Week Boys Team (13 participants) and Girls Team (17 participants) to help them prepare for the upcoming School Sport WA Country Week in June. The school teams have placed in the top 3 over the last 4 editions of this event. Seven students also participated in the Volleyball Australia Level 1 Online Referee Course.

Volleyball WA Coach Stephen Page said “the feedback from teachers was very positive and they were appreciative of the information we shared on coaching styles and drills.

In addition, we ran two referee workshops for a total of fifteen participants and three community come and try sessions for beach and indoor volleyball.

“Volleyball WA would like to thank our government funding partners for supporting our regional visit. Regional communities are always so grateful for access to expert coaching to boost their own programs and we are thankful for the opportunity to grow our sport and inspire the next generation.” Said Robyn Kuhl, CEO Volleyball WA.

All services provided by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries to the Indian Ocean Territories are fully funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Communications Division.

Volleyball WA would also like to thank our local partners for their support, the Shire of Christmas Island, Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and the Christmas Island Recreation Centre.
