WA Steel set to travel for first competition in two years

WA State Team travel is back!

The 2019 Australian Volleyball League saw the WA Steel teams compete in three rounds interstate and two rounds in WA between October and November. Since November 2019, the WA Steel, Volleyball WA’s Senior State Teams, have not had the opportunity to travel or compete.

March 2020 marked the final interstate trip for any VWA State Team post the commencement of COVID-19, when the Youth Beach State Teams travelled to Coolangatta, QLD for the Australia Youth Beach Volleyball Championships. Twenty months later, the WA Steel will become the first VWA State Team to travel interstate once again on the 13-14 November, where they will compete against the Tasmania Echidnas in replacement of the Australian Volleyball League, which was cancelled for a second year in a row due to COVID-19.

Prior to the teams departing for Tasmania, they will compete in home exhibition games on the 6-7 November at Warwick Stadium. This event will also serve as a fundraiser for the teams travelling to Tasmania with $5 entry at the door, which puts fans into the running for multiple gift baskets to be raffled off on Saturday night. The schedule is as follows.

Saturday 6 November

  • WA Steel Men – 5:00pm
  • WA Steel Women – 7:00pm

Sunday 7 November

  • WA Steel Men & Women – 11:00am

The teams have been training within a larger squad since June of this year. For the Men’s exhibition game, the WA Steel Team that is travelling to Tasmania will compete against a separate team that plays in other WA competitions together, made up mainly of a mix of WAVL State League players. The Women remain as a large squad of 19, therefore they will compete in a Black vs Gold intra-squad match.
