Southern Cross Volleyball Club Wins 2022 Club of the Year

The theme was disco, and guests arrived with their dancing shoes on, ready to take the opportunity to celebrate and relax with friends following a busy year of Volleyball. Network Ten’s Beau Pearson kept the audience entertained and the presentation flowing and there were several VIPs and trophy sponsors in attendance as well.

This year we inducted three exceptional individuals to our Hall of Champions, they were Laurel Wentworth, Lisa MacNeill, and Dan Howard all of them have represented both the State of WA and Australia in the sport of volleyball at an outstanding level. Laurel also went on to win Coach of the Year later in the evening which she said, “was very unexpected and she was thrilled to receive.”

Volleyball WA awarded an Order of Merit to Alexander Sands who was nominated by Rossmoyne Volleyball Club and Rossmoyne Senior High School for over 19 years of service to both organisations and the nurturing and development of some of WA’s best Volleyball talent.

Other big winners on the night were Will Dundas who won Referee of the Year. Will is a very familiar sight on Perth volleyball courts during the WA Volleyball League and WA Volleyball Junior League. He also refereed at the PSA and IGSSA events plus the Alcohol. Think Again Beach Tour. He travelled nationally to referee at the Australian Volleyball League and the Australian Youth Volleyball Championships as well. Will is a member of the VWA Referee Committee, a mentor for younger refs, acted as Chief Referee when needed and is currently training to become a Level 3 Referee.

The Trevor William OAM Club Administrator of the Year was tied in 2022, the award going to Sean Andrews from Southern Cross Volleyball Club and Maurice Marcelo from United Volleyball Club

Sean has been a driving force in the growth of the Southern Cross Volleyball Club over the past few years initially as President for 2 years from 2020 to 2022 before moving into the newly created Club Manager role early in 2022. During his time in the new role, Sean was responsible for a dramatic increase in activities across the club particularly in Kids and Junior Volley.

Maurice is one of two co-founders of the United Volleyball Club. The club was founded in 2018 and is steadily growing due to Maurice’s extraordinary work and contribution. Her capacity to keep learning and improving has the club set up to build on its success.

The Young Leader of the Year went to two very deserving individuals, Dylan Woods from ECU Volleyball Club and Jessica Grigio from Mandurah Volleyball Association. This was the fourth year in a row that Dylan has received this award just highlighting what an extraordinary role he plays for the club and the sport in WA. As a first-time recipient of this award Jess received a very loud cheer from the audience, many recognising her achievements, the number of roles she takes on for her club, and her work with kids and junior volley.

Reds Volleyball Club had another big year, with many of the clubs’ athletes and officials winning on the night they also won Champion Club Beach and the Robyn Fittock Indoor Volleyball Champion Club trophies as well.

The John McKay Regional Club of the Year went to the Mandurah Volleyball Association for the second year running and the Indoor Beach Volleyball Champion Centre went to Osborne Park.

And then to wind up the evening, Southern Cross Volleyball Club took out the biggest trophy of the night – the 2022 Volleyball Club of the Year. This award acknowledges the Club or Association that has contributed most to the development and growth of the sport. With most clubs performing exceptionally well in the past year, Volleyball WA congratulates Southern Cross Volleyball for coming out on top in a very competitive environment.

A special mention to Leighton Wynwood for winning the best dressed prize for the night who stood out in gold and on the catwalk.
