Australian Volleyball Super League to take the sport to another level

Volleyball Australia is excited to announce that the inaugural Australian Volleyball Super League will launch into its opening round on 12 August 2023.

VA has been working in close partnership with the six state and territory volleyball associations who hold licences for the foundation teams, developing an innovative League which will be exciting in a family-friendly live environment and also adapt strongly to a national television audience.

The foundation teams for the Australian Volleyball Super League will be:

  • Adelaide Storm
  • Canberra Super Heat
  • Melbourne Vipers
  • NSW Phoenix
  • Perth Steel
  • Queensland Pirates

In just over seven weeks, the League will see all foundation teams field both men’s and women’s teams which play on the same day, at the same venue in the same ticketed session.

In July, Volleyball Australia will announce the innovative modifications to the rules of the game which will make for fast-paced matches and tactical scoring plays, while remaining true to the recognised fundamentals of volleyball.

“There will always be a place for the traditional form of volleyball but the Australian Volleyball Super League has the ability to take the game to another level in this country,” said Andrew Dee, Volleyball Australia CEO.

“It’s no secret that Australia has one of the most competitive sports markets anywhere in the world and all around us other sports have looked at ways to make their product more exciting.

“We have spent a lot of time trialling the new rules, speaking to players, coaches and broadcasters about what will work, and the countdown is now on to see everything come together.

“I know all the states fielding teams have been concentrating closely on the fan experience at matches and we’re confident the Australian Volleyball Super League will reinvigorate fans of the sport right around the country.”

Rule changes, broadcast details and other information about the League will be released in the coming weeks.
