WA’s First Gold Medal-Winning Volleyball Team Reunites to Support Perth Steel

History came full circle over the weekend as members of Western Australia’s first ever national title winning volleyball team reunited at the opening round of the 2025 Australian Volleyball Super League to cheer on the Perth Steel Women. The special guests watched as the Steel secured a strong win over the Queensland Pirates, then joined the team courtside for photos and celebrations.

The 1987 WA Under 20 Women’s team made sporting history by becoming the first volleyball team from Western Australia, either women’s or men’s, to win a national championship. They defeated New South Wales in straight sets, three to zero, in a dominant final performance. Their success was matched by individual recognition, with the team earning three out of the six tournament awards. Beth Strang was named Best Blocker, while Pauline Manser, now the head coach of the Perth Steel Women, won Best Setter and the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Their appearance at the Super League opener was more than just a reunion. It was a celebration of legacy, progress, and the power of women supporting women in sport. The moment the past champions stood side by side with today’s rising stars captured a powerful message,  that success in sport is built across generations, through hard work, and community.

The reunion from the 1987 champions reminded all in attendance how far volleyball in Western Australia has come, and how important it is to honour those who laid the foundations. Their support for the current Perth Steel Women team sends a strong and positive message to young athletes across the state: the journey is long, the impact is lasting, and the future of women’s sport is brighter when we stand together.
