The Evolution of the WA Volleyball League

In 2018 Volleyball WA conducted a comprehensive external review of its premier indoor volleyball competition, the WA Volleyball League (WAVL).

The review was undertaken to find out how Volleyball WA can provide a better competition and highlight areas where the sport can develop. From this Volleyball WA and the Board have developed a three year vision to bring the game to the forefront of sport in WA.

To help you understand how this will affect you, we have broken down the new structure in to three divisions:

1. WAVL STATE LEAGUE & STATE LEAGUE RESERVES

This competition is for club teams only, which means you must be a member of a Volleyball WA platinum club – you can locate your closest club HERE.

WHO THIS IS FOR: This will be WA’s elite indoor volleyball competition and is for players who are interested in playing a high quality competitive game. It is the top tier of Volleyball WA’s development and talent identification pathway.

  • Players will need to have a platinum Volleyball WA membership ($98.00 for Adults and $78.00 for U19’s).

CHANGES IN 2019:

  • Games will mainly be played on Sundays at either 2.00 pm or 4.00 pm – this means that you can plan the rest of your Sunday.
  • Volleyball WA will be using three venues for this competition – north (either Warwick Stadium or ECU Joondalup), central (Loftus Centre) or south (ARC Cockburn).
  • Clubs competing in this grade are required to provide two Home Game fixtures which is an opportunity to showcase yourself to your family and friends.

2. WAVL DIVISIONS

This competition is for Club teams only, which means you must be a member of a Volleyball WA platinum club – you can locate your closest club HERE.

WHO THIS IS FOR: This competition targets players who are interested in playing high quality competitive games, but aren’t at the state league level. Whilst we hope you will have fun, this is not a social competition.

  • Players will need to have a platinum Volleyball WA membership ($98.00 for Adults and $78.00 for U19’s).

CHANGES IN 2019

  • Games will be played on Sundays at 8.00am, 9.30 am, 11.00 am and 12.30pm. Whilst you will still play best of five sets, the points in the sets have been reduced to ensure that most of all games will be played within your allocated timeslot.
  • Volleyball WA will be using three venues for this competition – north (either Warwick Stadium or ECU Joondalup), central (Loftus Centre) or south (ARC Cockburn).
  • Clubs entering teams into Division One and Two should note that some games might be played in Busselton and Mandurah.
  • The cost of each game, depending on the division you played, has either been reduced or stayed the same as 2018.
  • Each Division will have up to eight teams and two full rounds will be played, excluding finals – this means a shorter commitment for the season.
  • To further reduce your time commitment on Sunday’s duties requirements have been reduced to First Referee, Second Referee and Scorer – this means only three of you will have to duty.

3. PERTH VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE

This new competition is for any and everybody. You don’t need to be part of a club to play in the Perth Volleyball League, you just have to find a group of six players

  • Players will need to have a gold Volleyball WA membership ($31.00 for Adults and $26 for U19’s).

WHO THIS IS FOR: This competition targets players who want to have fun, play some great volleyball, and most importantly play with your friends.

  • You don’t have to join a Club, you only have to find a group of six players who want to play each game.
  • 50 minute games will be played on Sundays between 9:00am and 12:00pm – this means that you can still plan to have lunch with your family and friends.
  • VWA will be using three venues – north (either Warwick Stadium or ECU Joondalup), central (Loftus Centre) or south (ARC Cockburn) – depending on which part of Perth your team lives.
  • The cost of each game is only $80.00 and there will be no duty requirements.
  • Each Division will have up to eight teams and two full rounds will be played, excluding finals.
  • The only uniform requirement is wearing the same colour shirt.
