Volleyball WA has delivered another regional trip through the Alcohol. Think Again Regional Program, this time to the Kimberley region in the north of Western Australia.
After several months of planning Volleyball WA visited the towns of Broome and Derby to promote volleyball and upskill the communities. Volleyball WA Steel head coach Mandy Combes flew to the region for four days from the 17th of September to the 21st of September to conduct multiple School Volley clinics and a Teacher PD during the visit.
Mandy visited Broome Senior High School and Derby District High School to run 13 sessions to over 250 students. Ranging from Year 7 to Year 12, the students focused on learning the different skills and utilising these in the modified games they played at the end of the session. Broome Senior High School also used the opportunity to have Mandy facilitate sessions with their Year 11 and Year 12 ATAR students in preparation for their upcoming assessments.
The Teacher PD workshop was attended by nine teachers from Broome Senior High School. Mandy went through volleyball skills, drills and teaching points to assist the teachers with their classes and received positive feedback from the teachers who admitted they ‘would’ve loved more time.’
‘There were many students who showed good promise and were really keen, and the Teacher PD was fabulous with a great teaching crew to work with.’ Combes said.
Volleyball WA’s Club and Workforce Development Coordinator Julian Lloyd also attended the trip. Julian met with Broome’s Police and Community Youth Centre, the Shire of Broome, Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre and Broome Beach Volleyball club. Julian was also able to meet with the Kimberley Sport and Recreation staff from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, as well as staff from the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley.
“It was great to see how popular the sport of beach volleyball is in the Kimberley. The competitions at Broome Beach Volleyball are running at full capacity and they are looking to expanding somewhere with more courts” Lloyd said.
