Steel set for an early launch

After a challenging season in the 2019 Australian Volleyball League, the WA Steel Men & Women can now look forward to the new and exciting opportunities that lie ahead in 2020.

“Over the past twelve months, Volleyball WA has made efforts to explore and advance partnerships with Asian countries to provide opportunities for the WA Steel to compete year round against a diverse portfolio of talent. While these opportunities are still being finalised, we are confident that the Steel will have more than just the Australian Volleyball League to works towards in 2020.” said VWA State Teams & Events Coordinator, Jackie Tamburri.

The international discussions have led to three different potential options for the WA Steel to compete within the first half of the year:

WA Steel Women

  • Philippines Invitational Club Tournament – Manila, Philippines 14th – 21st April (TBC)
  • Perth International Tournament (Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines) – Perth, WA 3rd – 6th June (TBC)

WA Steel Men

  • East Java Tour in Perth – Camp & Competition, 7th – 16th June (TBC)

Due to the earlier start, the WA Steel will begin their Squad Phase training at the end of February. All 2019 WAVL State League and 2018-2019 WA Steel athletes will be invited to attend the Squad Phase for selection to these international opportunities.

Team Phase training and selections to compete in the 2020 Australian Volleyball League (AVL) will begin at the end of June, however if you are interested in participating in the AVL, you must begin training with the squad in February. Western Australia will host three home rounds this year and travel to Queensland and Canberra for the two away rounds:

  • 17th – 18th October – Home
  • 24th – 25th October – Canberra
  • 31st October – 1st November – Home
  • 7th – 8th November – Home
  • 14th – 15th November – Queensland

“Volleyball WA is excited to see what our Steel teams will achieve in all of 2020 and look forward to welcoming the new opportunities with open arms.” Said Tamburri.
