Volleyball WA is excited to announce the #HerGame Volleyball program is now running. A low cost and commitment free program designed for females only, #HerGame is about promoting health lifestyles and increasing participation in sport.

“#HerGame is not just another volleyball program, but a message of support for every girl, women, mother and daughter who feel like they don’t have a place to be proud about playing sport.” Karen Wickham Volleyball Participation and Development Manager said.

“It has been designed to provide a culturally appropriate environment where females can be active together.  We would also support females who would like to progress along our Volleyball pathway and offer educational opportunities in coaching and refereeing. “

One of the program’s coaches, Fatemeh Etemadi, knows all about the benefits of getting involved in sport.Born in Iran as an Afghan refugee, Fatemeh migrated to Australia as a teenager and has used volleyball as a way to meet new people and become more social.

“Volleyball is a game that needs more than two people, so you have to be social and it has no age limits. It has helped me meet people from different backgrounds, come together with new people and connect with each other.” Fatemeh said.

As ayouth leader from Perth’s Afghan community, Fatemeh is excited about helping girls play volleyball and build their confidence.

“Volleyball helped me to change from a shy girl and become a public speaker. It made me face my fears and learn how to connect with the WA community. Through volleyball I have achieved a healthier lifestyle by being active, all whilst having fun and being social.”

#HerGame has been made possible through the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries’ Targeted Participation Program.

With additional funding from Reclink Australia, #HerGame has been designed to encourage participation among culturally and linguistically diverse females by running one session per week at Cannington Leisureplex and Herb Graham Centre.
