Seniors Encouraged to Give Volleyball A Go During Seniors Week

WA Seniors Week is an annual event that encourages people of all ages to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of older people to the Western Australian community. WA Seniors Week is also a celebration of seniors’ active participation in community life.

One way seniors can participate is to play Chair Volley.

Chair Volley is an adapted version of Volleyball aimed at seniors but could also be played in an office, hospital rec. room or Kindy classroom. In any situation where mobility or space could be a challenge. It uses a lighter ball which could be a balloon, blow up beach ball or light volleyball. The lighter ball allows for greater variance of physical fitness or ability and encourages movement rather than skill.

Some of the benefits for seniors include:

  • Physical Wellbeing
  • Mental Wellbeing
  • Neck flexibility
  • Social engagement
  • Core strength
  • Concentration
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Laughter
  • Shoulder mobility
  • Part of a team/A sense of belonging

Volleyball WA currently operate coach lead Chair Volley programs in Senior Centres across Perth and also sell Senior Volley kits for centres to run their own.

If you or someone you know might like to give Volleyball a go, we will be at the following events:

  • Wednesday November 15 – SRCWA Have a Go Day at Burswood Park
  • Friday November 17 – ActivAGE Gosnells Senior Expo at Mills Park Beckenham
