Christmas Island DHS Returns to the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup

Following their sixth consecutive title at the School Sport WA Senior High School Country Week volleyball competition earlier this year, Christmas Island District High School (CIDHS) will return to the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup (AVSC) in 2025.

Travelling approximately 6268km, the team will take on some of the best in the country in the Year 12 Division 1 Male competition. Team Captain Matthew Sambell, who travelled with the team in 2023 to AVSC, is eager to take on the challenge:

“All of us here on Christmas Island are super excited to get back to the Gold Coast to represent Christmas Island District High School at the AVSC 2025. We have been working overtime to get in the best form and fitness in order to perform our best. With the added help of our new assistant coach and volleyball expert José Martinez we hope to make our community proud!”

José returned to the Island earlier this year for his second visit to deliver coaching and community engagement initiatives through a series of volleyball workshops and school sessions. This visit, delivered on behalf of the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport through a partnership with the Australian Government, is one that Volleyball WA is proud to facilitate.

In part of their individual preparation, team member Archer Brooker recently competed at the Australian Youth Volleyball Championship in Perth in September. Competing in the U18 WA Gold team, Archer’s experience will be invaluable to the team.

Volleyball WA is proud to support the CIDHS team on their journey, with the Board sponsoring memberships for the players to take part in the competition.

CIDHS is one of eight WA schools heading to the Gold Coast – Aquinas College, Greenwood College, Mandurah Baptist College, Penrhos College, Rossmoyne Senior High School, St James Anglican School and St Mary’s Anglican Girl’s School will also be competing at AVSC in 2025. Good luck to all involved!
