WAVL Round 16-CATS AND RAPTORS ON THE HUNT

CATS AND RAPTORS ON THE HUNT

Balcatta Women upset league leaders, and Rossmoyne down the Stars at home!

After a stellar night of Junior competition for the WAVJL Finals on Friday night, the volleyball weekend continued Saturday with Northern Stars hosting Rossmoyne at Warwick Stadium. Both the Rossmoyne Women’s and Men’s teams showcased some of their best volleyball all year against the Stars to secure 3-1 and 3-0 wins respectively. Stars would go on to defeat Southern Cross in their second match of the weekend, but Rossmoyne were unable to complete a double, losing to league leaders UWA 3-1.

On Sunday it was 1v3 in the Superleague 1 women’s division, and Balcatta were looking for redemption after a tough loss to ECU before the Collie break. UWA have been almost unbeatable throughout 2017, however Balcatta were not to be deterred. In an incredibly tight match it was the Cats who came away with the points, winning 16-14 in the fifth set.

Elsewhere in the competition, it was the Superleague 2 Women’s competition that was the one to watch. Northern Stars provided a scare for second place ECU, showing tenacity in defence and smart attacking play.  Eventually ECU’s powerful serving proved to be their most effective weapon, clinching their victory 15-12 in the fifth. The UWA derby was another tight five-setter, with UWA Blue defeating UWA Gold.

Teams of the week:
