Kids were all smiles in Kalgoorlie!

Volleyball WA was in Kalgoorlie last week in a follow-up to our successful visit in November 2021. This was again made possible with the support of the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, and Lotterywest who recognise that sport and recreation create vibrant, inclusive, and connected WA communities.

Volleyball WA also received on the ground support from the local DLGSC office and the Kalgoorlie Volleyball Association, and between the three organisations there is an established commitment to continue working together to promote volleyball in the Goldfields region.

Our Level 3 Coach, Gareth Whitehead, ran school clinics at Eastern Goldfields College, CAPS Kurrawang, John Paul College, and Hannans Primary School. He also ran a Junior Volley Clinic for the Kalgoorlie Volleyball Association at Maku Stadium.

He rounded out the week with an appearance at the John Paul College Invitational Volleyball Competition. This event is in its second year and is led by the PE Staff at John Paul College. Volleyball WA is very happy to support this event which gives students an opportunity to compete against other local schools.

Our visit and the event were covered by the Kalgoorlie Miner which we hope will build further awareness for the sport and attract some new talent to the game. Gareth was quoted as saying, “I’ve come down to cover a lot of the skills and go through the fundamentals, but they always progress a lot faster when they actually put it into practice in games, so it’s been nice to see that progression from the start all the way through to the end of the week.” He also pointed out that the” tournament also provided an opportunity for students who are studying sports coaching to practice their officiating skills.”

Regional WA is producing some wonderful talent, just recently we discovered Hamish Hazelden (Esperance) and Thomas Heptinstall (Bunbury) are from country WA and are now representing Australia as Volleyroos so Volleyball WA will continue to visit regional areas identifying and developing young talent.
