AUSTRALIAN VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE RETURNS TO WA

The long-awaited return of the Australian Volleyball League (AVL) will land this October when Western Australia welcomes the top teams from across the country to compete in the first full season in three years.

The Australian Volleyball League is the highest level of Indoor Volleyball in Australia, with seven States and Territories set to battle it out across thirteen different venues in October and November 2022.

In just under 100 days, the WA Steel, Western Australia’s top Men’s and Women’s volleyball teams will host the Melbourne Vipers in Round 1 on the 8th and 9th of October. The last time WA matched up against the Victorians in a full home and away season was in 2019.

WA will host three rounds at home against Melbourne, New South Wales, and Tasmania. The teams will also travel to Canberra, Queensland, and Adelaide for their away games, with the top four teams at the end of the regular season travelling to Gold Coast on the 3rd and 4th of December in a two-day finals series.

Previously known as the Volleyball WA Hornets and the Volleyball WA Pearls, the decision was made in 2018 to rebrand, with both teams coming together to play under one unified name, the Volleyball WA Steel. Volleyball WA is excited to re-introduce the WA Steel to sports fans after years of COVID-19 cancellations and uncertainty.

The teams are made up of players currently competing in the WA State League, plus several athletes who have been representing Australia overseas with the Volleyroos. Trials have been underway since May, with squads being finalised in July.

The WA Steel are in excellent hands under the leadership of some of WA’s most experienced and dedicated coaches. The 2022 program is being led for a second straight year by Head Coaches Ben Gray (Men) and Pauline Manser (Women). Ben will be assisted by Rachel Trent and Desiree Tan, and Pauline will be assisted by Laurel Wentworth and Dylan Wood.

This season there will be plenty of opportunities to check out the best volleyball action Australia has to offer and to support the WA Steel in their AVL campaign. One way to get behind the team is by purchasing a WA Steel Fan Membership. From just $40 you will receive benefits such as entry to all 12 home games, access to the VIP area on Saturday night games, and discounts on merchandise. Part proceeds go to the players.
