ECU WIN BIG
Upset wins for ECU Chequers in both Superleague 1 divisions highlighted this week’s action, and with 2 rounds to play the fight for finals places is closer than ever!
In a second-versus-third matchup for SL1 women, ECU went into the match against a full strength Balcatta Cats missing key players. After a convincing first set win by Balcatta, it was the Chequers who rose to the challenge and won 3 tight sets to close out the match 3-1; 17-25,27-25,27-25,25-19. They take second spot from Balcatta as a result.
In the Men’s division, ECU found themselves facing fourth-placed Rossmoyne Raptors to try and bring themselves off the bottom of the table. It was a hard-fought match that went down to the wire, with Chequers taking the points 16-14 in the fifth set. This win sees ECU step off the bottom of the table.
Elsewhere in the competition, Northern Stars SL1 women provided a scare for ladder leaders UWA, taking the first set of their match 26-24. The Stars were unable to back up their strong start however, going down in four sets.
On the Men’s side, ECU took full advantage of a three-set loss by closest rivals Fremantle by putting in a gutsy effort against the top-two hopefuls Northern Stars. ECU forced the Stars into a fourth set before eventually losing the match. This puts Chequers two points behind Fremantle, giving them a chance to pull themselves off the bottom of the table.
