Volleyball WA attended the Kimberley Cup last month to support the growing interest and participation in Volleyball in the region. This annual three day event covers several sports including Volleyball with schools entering teams in boys, girls and mixed divisions.

Games were played at the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre (BRAC), a multi-sport venue in the region providing competitors with a real hard court experience. The competing schools were Broome Senior High School, Derby District High School and St Mary’s College. Congratulations to St Mary’s College who won all three divisions.

While at the event our representative had the opportunity to interact with the local school teachers to discuss how we might be able to further support the delivery of the game in schools in the region. More resources and teacher PD were certainly high on the agenda but more support for students wanting to trial for State Teams also came up- clearly the region has some gifted athletes.

Volleyball WA also used the occasion to have some additional meetings in the region.  Tom Chapman the Acting Manager in the Kimberley for the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries identified some opportunities for additional beach volleyball courts to be built as part of the Cable Beach Foreshore Development and Master Plan for BRAC. We will work with the Broome Volleyball Association to keep advocating for these Places to Play outcomes.

In addition to this we also met with the CEO, Mick Albert from the regional indigenous community Garnduwa. Traditionally AFL and Basketball have been strong within the community but there is a growing interest in Volleyball so we discussed ways in which we could support the upskilling of staff in the first instance and future visits by VWA.

The Broome and Kimberly Region is one which we visit a couple of times per year running school clinics, teacher PD, coach and referee training and other specialised training for existing players. These are trips are all made possible with the support of the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, and Lotterywest who recognise that sport and recreation create vibrant, inclusive, and connected WA communities.
