Australian Sitting Volleyball Championships: A Growing Inclusive Sport

Sitting Volleyball has been making waves at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, capturing the attention of sports enthusiasts worldwide. Originating in Europe in the 1950s, this unique sport has been a staple at the Paralympic Games since 1980, showcasing its participants’ incredible athleticism and spirit. Australia will secure automatic qualification for men’s and women’s sitting volleyball events at the Brisbane 2032 Paralympics.

Sitting volleyball enthusiasts have another reason to celebrate as Volleyball Australia reintroduces the Australian Sitting Volleyball Championships after decades. Scheduled to take place on September 14th and 15th in Bendigo, Victoria, this event aims to promote the sport nationally and provide a platform for athletes of all abilities to showcase their talent.

One of the most remarkable aspects of sitting volleyball is its inclusivity. While there is a common misconception that the sport is only for individuals with physical impairments, the reality is that classification is only necessary for international competitions. The Volleyball WA team competing in Bendigo this weekend comprises two people with disability and one veteran who has represented Team Australia at the Invictus Games in Dusseldorf, Germany in 2023!

The VWA Sitting Volleyball Team is a testament to the power of collaboration and support from sponsors such as APM and Orthotic Prosthetic Solutions. Their dedication has enabled the team to thrive and compete at the highest level, embodying the true spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

As the Australian Sitting Volleyball Championships continue to gain momentum, there is a growing interest in the sport and opportunities for individuals to get involved. Whether as a player, supporter, or volunteer, sitting volleyball offers a fun, inclusive, and fast-paced experience.
