The 2018 indoor volleyball season has come to a thrilling conclusion with the 2018 WAVL Grand Finals. A night of volleyball action saw WA’s top teams battle it out at Warwick Stadium for the 2018 state title.
The night got underway with the Women’s Super League One final between the 2017 runner up UWA and ECU Chequers. UWA came out swinging and looked determined to make amends for their 2017 loss. A late surge from ECU in the first set wasn’t enough to stop UWA taking the set 25-23. The rest of the night followed a similar pattern with the younger ECU team challenging the 2017 Grand Finalist, however UWA’s experience proved to be the determining factor as they marched to a three set win and the 2018 title.
The Men’s 2017 Super League One winners Balcatta were out to defend their title against an in form Northern Stars. The Stars exploded out of the gates and produced a solid run of points to open up the Men’s Grand Final. Balcatta started to find a better rhythm late in the first set, however Northern Stars couldn’t be stopped and won the first set comfortably 25-18. The second set pushed both teams and saw Balcatta replicate its 2017 Grand Final brilliance to push Northern Stars for every point. A thrilling final few points from Northern Stars clinched the second set for them 26-24. The final set played out much the same as the first, Northern Stars blistering attack took a toll and they claimed the third set 25-19 to take home the 2018 Men’s Super League 1 Grand Final.
In the Super League Two Men’s final, ECU Chequers had a small slip up in the third set but otherwise were in control the whole game defeating Balcatta 25-19, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17. While in the women’s final UWA tied to replicate the Super League 1 women, however Rossmoyne were too strong and sealed the deal in three. Rossmoyne defeat UWA 26-24, 26-24, 25-9.
In one of the night’s longest matches, the Super League 3 Men’s final went the full length to five sets. UWA and Balcatta battled hard, however UWA managed to get the win 3-2, 25-15, 24-26, 29-27, 25-11, 15-12.
Super League 3 Women saw Northern Stars take the first two sets against the UWA girls. A third set win for UWA wasn’t enough to stop Stars from stealing the fourth to win the game, 25-17, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23.
While in the Super League Reserve men’s final UWA Blue were able to clinch a five set thriller over Balcatta Red, 28-26, 15-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-13. UWA collected their third win of the night with a win in the Super League Reserve Women’s match. The Northern Stars fought back to take the third but UWA were too strong and won the game in four sets, 25-19, 25-14, 23-25, 25-19.
