Geraldton Delivers Familiar Beach Tour Winds and Winners

The Alcohol. Think Again Beach Tour made its Geraldton debut last weekend for Round 6 of the 2020/2021 season. 27 metro teams hit the road to meet 3 local teams for the Labour Day long-weekend tournament.

It was an extra windy start to the weekend, reflecting common conditions that WA athletes endure for most competitions, but one local Geraldton team showed the truth in home court advantage.

Geraldton Beach Volleyball Group committee members Fredrick Pritchard and Vaughan Masters paired up for their first Alcohol. Think Again Beach Tour appearance, and made it through to the semi-final game in the Competitive Division. As any regular beach tour participant would agree, reaching a semi-final in your first tournament is no easy feat.

“We had heaps of fun playing together in our first beach tour competition, and really enjoyed having all of the teams up in Geraldton for the first time. It was an amazing weekend and we hope to see the tour return to Geraldton in the future.” Said Pritchard.

In the Elite Division, there were once again familiar athletes on the winners podium. For the men, WA Open winner Ky Landers took home his second gold medal of the season with partner Griffin Bateman, who also collected his second tournament win this year.

On the women’s side, Shelby Maher claimed her tenth consecutive Alcohol. Think Again Beach Tour win, alongside Tessa Anderson who brought in her second gold medal this season.

“It was great to play at a new venue and in a new location.” Said Anderson, who has a long history of competing and winning on the beach tour.

“It was a fantastic weekend of volleyball in Geraldton and was topped off with a win in the grand final with my good friend, Shelby. It’s always an enjoyable tournament when you’re playing alongside someone you’ve trained with and have known for years.” Anderson added.

The second regional stop on the tour takes place next weekend on Town Beach in Mandurah, another new location for the tour, so clear your calendars for the 13-14 March and catch all the action.
